You are a magnificent yet spiteful bitch......
My Cougar decided to scare me half to death last night. After chasing a false low oil pressure reading over the summer I found the issue and all was well. I recently did an oil change and had been driving her without any problems.
Fast forward to last night. I started the car and let her run for a few minutes as she’d been sitting for two week. Juuuuuuust before shutting down the low pressure chime came on and the gauge shot to ZERO. I cursed, too the Focus to work and came home. Out came the mechanical gauge. Hot idle 750 RPM reads a solid 18 PSI and @ 2000 RPM it reads 42. I putter on down to Advance Auto Parts and pick up a new sending unit. Chime is still going bananas.
Let me preface this by telling you perhaps the biggest quirk of this car.
If I turn on the rear window defroster, I can watch the oil pressure gauge show a higher pressure and also watch the pressure gauge decrease upon shutting the defroster off.
Full digital dash. No bimetal gauges.
Only thing I can think of at this point is the wiring has gone to shit and is giving too much resistance to the gauge.
I have to figure out a way to circumvent the chime whilst I dig into the EVTM to research so I can drive the damn thing. I have a feeling this is gonna take a bit of research.
I’ve owned this car for over 18 years. The first two years were bliss. She’s fought me ever since....

I think you’re on the right track there’s gotta be something insane with the wiring. That’s crazy.
